The Echo has reported a proposal to tarmac the Southchurch Park car park and install pay and display to help shoppers.
Ron Woodley, Deputy Leader of Southend Council, said: “It shows how serious we are about getting people shopping in the town."
I live in this area and although it is a pleasant walk to the town, I cannot imagine anyone would wish to park in Southchurch Park to go shopping! It takes around 25 minutes by foot, which would make the journey back with shopping bags a workout that few would wish to undertake!
Furthermore, parents of Greenways will look to pick up their children without getting charged. This will force them to park anywhere but Southchurch Park, and cause congestion and stress to everyone involved! There is, however, a plan that will see Southend resident exempt from the charge, so this could alleviate these concerns. Further information is expected.
With respect to Cllr Woodley, it is difficult to understand the logic. I certainly back any ideas that can boost the fortunes of Southend High Street, however, this one ought to be...parked.
